Impassioned Guidance for the Passionate Collector

With more than 30 years of experience in the visual arts, my career has included managing fine art galleries, independent and corporate curatorial work, collection management, nonprofit management and private collection advising. Following a tenure of more than two decades curating the collection of a Fortune 500 financial company, Brian J. Lang Fine Art Advising was established to guide both individual and institutional collectors through all stages of a thoughtfully planned and executed collection strategy

My Role As An Advisor

As a professional advisor, my primary responsibility is to educate and empower my clients with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. My goal is to enrich each client’s individual experience, always working in their best interest, and to be a trusted, independent and objective partner.

A Trusted Partner

The art market can be complex, dynamic, and, at times, intimidating, but collecting art should never be reserved for a select few. Meaningful collections are built at every scale and budget, reflecting the unique interests, experiences, and aspirations of the individuals who create them. As an independent advisor, my role is to provide the knowledge, objectivity, and guidance that allow clients to navigate the market with confidence and peace of mind. Working together, we develop a thoughtful approach grounded in education, trust, and shared goals—transforming collecting from an overwhelming process into an accessible, rewarding, and deeply personal pursuit.

Legacy Planning

Building a meaningful collection requires more than access to the market—it requires a trusted partner who understands your interests, goals, and values. Drawing upon more than thirty years of experience across galleries, museums, corporate collections, and private advising, I work collaboratively with clients to identify exceptional opportunities, navigate acquisitions and sales, and make thoughtful decisions about the evolution of their collections. Together, we develop a clear vision and strategy that reflects both personal passion and long-term stewardship, ensuring that every addition, transition, or deaccession strengthens the collection as a whole.

A collection is a living record of ideas, relationships, and personal meaning. My role is to help clients care for and manage their collections with the same intentionality that guided their creation. From documentation and conservation planning to installation, loans, and collection strategy, I provide independent, objective guidance grounded in decades of curatorial and collection-building experience. Working together, we create practical frameworks that preserve the integrity, accessibility, and enduring value of each collection for years to come.

Thoughtful legacy planning begins with understanding what a collection represents and what its future should achieve. Whether considering family succession, philanthropic gifts, institutional partnerships, or strategic deaccessioning, I help clients articulate their intentions and navigate complex decisions with clarity and confidence. Through a collaborative and deeply personal process, I work alongside collectors, heirs, and professional advisors to develop bespoke plans that honor both the artworks themselves and the values, stories, and aspirations they embody.
